What Is Redox Potential And How Does It Affect Your Health?

Redox potential measures the ability of water to reduce or oxidize contaminants (toxins). It is sometimes referred as oxidation-reduction potential (ORP).

Oxidation involves an exchange of electrons between two atoms. The atom is “oxidized” when it loses an electron in the process. The atom is “reduced” when it gains an electron.

All liquids have a oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), which is measured in mill voltage (mV). A positive redox reading promotes oxidation (aging), and a negative redox reading will reduce or negate oxidation. The higher the positive number, the worse it is; the lower the negative number, the better it is for the body.

Positive ORP increases oxidation leading to free radical damage to cells; a forerunner to degenerative diseases. This provides no antioxidant capacity to help the body to neutralize acidity or prevent free radical damage to our cells. In other words, the body rusts and is damaged by this increased oxidation.

Negative ORP, however, which is produced with ionized alkaline water (or raw foods or freshly squeeze juice), literally retards the aging process. It counteracts oxidative damage to our cells by scavenging for free radicals and neutralizing them. Negative ORP is a very powerful antioxidant.

Oxidized Acidic Water has a strong oxidation potential (+700 to +800 mV), a shortage of electrons giving it the ability to oxidize and sterilize.
